Inslee floats increases in minimum wage, teacher pay

Former Governors Christine Gregoire and Gary Locke treated their annual State of the State speeches more as formalities, adding little or no new policy statements beyond what they had already unveiled in their budgets.  But Gov. Jay Inslee saved a few surprises for his address to the legislature this year, proposing a higher minimum wage statewide and changing his position on education funding.  Although he initially proposed a “hold steady” budget for 2014, Inslee now wants cost-of-living adjustments for school employees, to be paid for by closing some tax exemptions, which he promises to specify later.  The two proposals were immediately criticized by the Majority Coalition, made of Senate Republicans and two Democrats who hold a two-seat margin in the State Senate.
